The Transcatheter Heart Valve Department has been operating since 2010. The Department staff have performed more than 1,400 transcatheter aortic valve replacements (the most in Greece), with all types of valves available today (SAPIEN 3, Edwards Lifesciences; Evolut PRO, Medtronic; Portico, Abbott; ACURATE neo and LOTUS Edge, Boston Scientific; JenaValve) and using all possible implantation methods (transfemoral, transaortic, transthoracic )

All cardiologists study the disorders of the heart, but the study of adult and child heart disorders are through different training pathways. Therefore, an adult cardiologist (often simply called “cardiologist”) is inadequately trained to take care of children, and pediatric cardiologists are not trained to take care of adult heart disease.

What Causes Heart Failure?

Coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease (CAD), a disease of the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart, causes decreased blood flow to the heart muscle. If the arteries become blocked or severely narrowed, the heart becomes starved for oxygen and nutrients.

Heart attack. A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery becomes suddenly blocked, stopping the flow of blood to the heart muscle. A heart attack damages the heart muscle, resulting in a scarred area that does not function properly.

Cardiomyopathy. Damage to the heart muscle from causes other than artery or blood flow problems, such as from infections or alcohol or drug abuse.

Conditions that overwork the heart. Conditions including high blood pressure, valve disease, thyroid disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or heart defects present at birth can all cause heart failure. In addition, heart failure can occur when several diseases or conditions are present at once.

Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram is a test that uses ultrasound to show how your heart muscle and valves are working. The sound waves make moving pictures of your heart so your doctor can get a good look at its size and shape. You might hear them call it “echo” for short.
